چکیده

Single breath pulmonary function tests of the forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) type require adjustments for age and height before the extent of their deviation from normal standards can be assessed. Many regression equations have been proposed in the literature. The Committee on Rating of Mental and Physical Impairment (1965) has provided tables of normal values of FEV1 and FVC for adults by sex, age, and height. These recommended standards were adapted from a study in the United States (Kory, Callahan, Boren, and Syner, 1961). Subsequently, a multiple regression equation was derived from the pooled results of four international studies (including the work of Kory and his co-workers) to predict FEV1 values in white Caucasian males (Cotes, Rossiter, Higgins, and Gilson, 1966). In epidemiological investigations it is sometimes necessary to estimate the extent of impairment in lung function for groups of persons exposed to certain occupational hazards, in relation to their smoking habits, age, and the presence or absence of respiratory symptoms. An extensive study of the aetiology, prevalence, and progression of respiratory disability among men employed in the steel industry in South Wales was recently conducted (Lowe et al., 1968). Regression equations were published which were derived from observations on 8,106

تاثیر مصرف حاد ال-کارنیتین بر نقطه شکست تهویه ای و عملکرد ورزشی طی فعالیت فزاینده

Background and purpose:Many athletes adopt nutritional manipulations to improve their performance. Among the substances generally consumed is carnitine (L-trimethyl-3-hydroxy-ammoniobutanoate) which has been used by athletes as an ergogenic aid, due to its role in the transport of long-chain fatty acids across mitochondrial membranes. Nutritional supplements containing carbohydrates, proteins...

A comparison of gas exchange indices used to detect the anaerobic threshold.

This study was undertaken to determine which of four commonly used ventilatory or gas exchange indices provides the most accurate and reliable detection of the anaerobic threshold (AT). Sixteen subjects performed two cycle ergometer tests to volitional fatigue. After 4 min of unloaded cycling, the work rate was increased 20 W/min. Ventilatory and gas exchange measurements were made every 30 s t...

The Effect of Beta-Alanine Supplementation on First and Second Ventilatory Threshold of Male Swimmers

Background and Objectives: One of the important factors in comparative athletes, especially swimmers, is respiratory function and respiration regulation during training and competition. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of 14 days of beta-alanine supplementation on first and second ventilatory threshold of the male swimmers. Materials and Methods: Fourteen male swimm...

Indices of ventilatory lung function (FVC, FEV1, FEV %) which adjust for age and height.

The results of ventilatory function tests (FVC, FEV1, and FEV %) depend to a great extent on age and height. In epidemiological investigations, the main purpose of which is to analyse the influence of environmental factors on lung function in the population, it is therefore necessary to use multiple regression methods. This form of statistical analysis is difficult and laborious when there is n...

Lung function in the absence of respiratory symptoms in overweight children and adolescents*

OBJECTIVE To describe lung function findings in overweight children and adolescents without respiratory disease. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study involving male and female overweight children and adolescents in the 8-18 year age bracket, without respiratory disease. All of the participants underwent anthropometric assessment, chest X-ray, pulse oximetry, spirometry, and lung volume me...

Effects of acute hypoxia on the estimation of lactate threshold from ventilatory gas exchange indices during an incremental exercise test.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity of non-invasive lactate threshold estimation using ventilatory and pulmonary gas exchange indices under condition of acute hypoxia. Seven untrained males (21.4+/-1.2 years) performed two incremental exercise tests using an electromagnetically braked cycle ergometer: one breathing room air and other breathing 12 % O2. The lactate threshol...
